On top of a high, forested mountain in the Grass Country, there was a temple. In the temple, monks practised their art. taijutsu and staff fighting was their way of meditating, although they also practised some Ninjutsu for defensive purposes. They mostly got their inspiration from the monkeys that swung from the branches near the temple, copying some of their actions and molding them into their taijutsu and staff kata's. This gave them an agile and fast, if not paticularly powerful, style of fighting.
The priests had a belief that one day, word would reach them of a young boy with bizarre chakra who would become a great warrior. When, in a small nearby village, they heard a rumour about a misfit ophan child born with a birthmark that was almost identical to their temple's symbol, they needed no more encouragement. Taking the boy from the village without a fuss (the villagers were glad to see the back of him), they brought him back to the temple and, after the Head Monk noted his chakra was tinted gold, trained him in their way of fighting. The child was a natural at the taijutsu, picking up the moves faster than any of the priests. He even made improvements to it, making it more effective.
The young child had some trouble with the staff fighting at first, his hands instinctively dropping it to fight bare-handed. When he learned to keep a hold of it, he still had trouble melding the monkey taijutsu with the staff fighting. Eventually though, he mastered that art too, his nimble fingers manipulating the staff with more than normal efficiency. The ninjutsu arts he was proficient at, but not that extaordinary. His real talents lay in his taijutsu and staff fighting, able to weave about a battlefield with amazing speed. For such purpose, the monks made Yamazu a special Staff made from the tallest tree of higest reaches of the temple mountain. Made with the young boy's chakra, legend said that although made from wood, it was as hard as steel, and whoever held it would be protected from enemy attacks.
After several long years of training, Yamazu grew bored, having learned everything that he could from the priests. Many travellers visited the mountain temple to trade and several times the young boy tried to escape using them as cover, with the monks always catching him and bringing him back. Then one day a merchant from Konohagakure, a shinobi village, came to the temple and told tales of his home and how some ninja could summon monkeys to fight with them. When Yamazu asked where these monkeys resided, the merchant replied that he did not know and that it was a secret to all except those who could summon them.
Upon hearing this story, Yamazu felt a strong desire to go to this place, this Konohagakure, and learn all he could. The monks, knowing that they would have to let Yamazu go at some point, had only one condition for Yamazu; that he took the time to enjoy himself and look around at the world. And to send lots of letters back home. Training To Be A Shinobi- Spoiler:
Joining the merchant on the long journey back to the Village, Yamazu spent a lot of his time travelling causing trouble, stealing things and generally making as big of a nuscance of himself as possible. Finally, they reached there destination, the poor merchant abondoning Yamazu at the gates. When the guards saw the suspiscious young man loitering around the area, they became weary and tried to talk to him. Seeing them approach, Yamazu thought they were trying to play a game of hide and seek like the monks used to play with him and he shot off. Seeing him flee, the guards gave chase but were unable to catch or find the odd boy.
Eventually, Yamazu somehow managed to find his way into the office of the Hokage and was quickly apprehended by ANBU operatives. Laughing at them and saying 'Your turn!', the ANBU threw the boy in a cell and interrogated him. They soon found he was no threat and left his fate up to the jounin in charge. The man, named Fushii, decided to have the odd child join his newly formed genin team, to the exasperation of his subordinates.
Excited to be finally a part of Konoha, Yamazu soon found that his presence was less than welcome among his new peers. There were two of them, a girl called Aikou with a unique ability to resist all forms of illusion and a boy named Katai, who could reach into people's minds and rip answers from them or plant false information. Niether of them were particularly skilled in taijutsu, which was Yamazu's strong point. Pitching them against each other to see their potential, Fushii watched as over the next few minutes Katai tried to trap Aikou in a genjutsu but was unable to do so, while Aikou was unable defend herself against Yamazu's advanced taijutsu and was soundly beaten. Katai could not match the new addition's speed and was proptly punched in the face.
Fushii announced that Aikou was a supplimentary type of fighter, able to back up other people. Katai and Yamazu's skills were obvious, genjutsu and close combat repectively. He planned to train them to compliment each others skills. After the jounin had left, Katai immediately revealed himself as a bully and began mocking Aikou and Yamazu, her on her weakness and him on his odd appearence and personality. Yamazu easily laughed it off, asking how his face was after he had smacked him around it. Annoyed, Katai stormed away. Aikou began to warm to the odd boy and they agreed to work harder to be a good team.
Fushii took them on several low levelled missions (many of which ended hilariously when Yamazu messed something up) and trained them on complimentary techniques. He taught Aikou how to track and find enemies, Katai more advanced genjutsu and Yamazu some basic ninjutsu that the monks did not know. The young boy had asked around about the stories he had heard from the merchant about monkey summons, but was told only that to summon an animal one first had to sign a summoning contract, and the man with the contract for the monkeys was no longer in the Village (although he was still a member of Konohagakure's shinobi). The Chuunin Exams- Spoiler:
Eventually, time came for him to sit the Chuunin Exams. During the Written Exam his companions, Aikou and Katai, managed to successfully pass without much trouble, with Aikou using her intellect and Katai ripping the answers out of another person's mind with his specialist technique. Yamazu found it much more difficult, having neither Aikou's mind nor Katai's abilities but luckily Katai could use that same skill to implant the answers into Yamazu's mind and they all passed.
Moving onto the next round, they were told to collect a heaven scroll from another team in The Forest Of Death (as the exams were being held in Konoha at the time). Thanks to Aikou’s tracking skills, Yamazu's combat abilities and Katai’s ability to rip answers out of peoples minds, they found a team with a heaven scroll and took it from them. The beginning of the teams' troubles began here.
While Yamazu wanted to let the opposing team go free, Aikou believed that it would be safer to incapacitate them so they would not follow and try to take back the scrolls. Katai on the other hand wanted to just kill them, to be on the safe side. Split on the decision, Katai distracted his team-mates with a genjutsu. Aikou was not affected thanks to her ability, but Yamazu was and he attacked Aikou forcing her to defend herself while Katai killed the opposing team. Releasing Yamazu from the genjutsu, Katai declared the matter closed and carried on towards the tower.
After this event, things were always strained within the team. Yamazu was angry at himself for not acting quicker and Aikou, for defending herself when she should have defended the other team. Katai looked down on them both for allowing mercy to interfere with their goal. Yamazu was just saw it as the normal dysfunction he had expected of people outside the temple. By the time the finals arrived, they had all stopped talking with each other.
Aikou, still distracted about what happened in the forest, lost her match. Katai slaughtered his opponent, bombarding his mind with terrible visions that made him rip himself apart. Yamazu took the more straight forward approach and brought his opponent to his knees after ten minutes of ceaseless attack. After the Chuunin Exams, both Yamazu and Katai were made chuunin, but Aikou was left behind. Due to the fact she was the only one of the team to enter the Exam and fail Aikou was split from the other two, but Yamazu made up with Aikou and made sure that they would stay in touch. Return Of The Monkey Sage- Spoiler:
Yamazu went on many missions after becoming a chuunin. He learned some new tricks too, such as some advanced elemental techniques. He did not just train and do missions though. He kept his word to Aikou and met up with her often. It was about this time that the man who was to be Yamazu's second master returned to Konoha.
Fushii, having heard of the man's reappearance and knowing how much Yamazu wanted to learn how to summon, approached him and requested that he take a look at his student. The man, known only as the Monkey Sage, agreed to observe a training session between Fushii and Yamazu so that he may judge the boy's skills. Meeting the young shinobi in the training grounds, Fushii told him that they were going to have a no holds barred sparring match to see how much that Yamazu had grown. Nodding excitedly, the newly named chuunin attacked his sensei swiftly. For almost thirty minutes the match went on, with Yamazu almost ending it several times with a well timed kick or strike, before Fushii called an end to the battle.
Calling out to the forest for the man to show himself, the Monkey Sage came forward and explained who he was. Yamazu's excitement quickly turned to shock when the man said that he was not worthy to sign the contract he carried and turned to walk away. Taken aback, the young chuunin's face quickly broke out into a mischievous grin and he stooped to pick up a small clump of earth. Throwing it at the Sage, the man easily turned and caught it but was surprised when he saw the boy had managed to slip the large scroll from his back. With a laugh and a wave, Yamazu fled into the forest with a very angry Sage hot on his heels.
The chase went on for several days before the Sage managed to find and take back the contract from Yamazu. Complimenting his skills but still refusing to help him, the Sage made to run off himself. The Sage was a highly talented ninja, but no matter where he turned he kept finding the young shinobi waiting to begin an attack. However, Yamazu was no match for the Sage in straight up combat and every time they fought he was beaten down by the man. After the sixth attack, the wannabe summoner collapsed in exhaustion. Finally impressed, the Sage agreed to not only let him sign the contract, but to teach him how to summon as well as showing him some new techniques. Training With The Sage- Spoiler:
While this was going on, Katai had decided that the Village had nothing more to offer him and left. However, wanting to keep the element of surprise if he ever needed such a thing, he captured and conditioned another Konoha shinobi to act like him and continue living in the Village in his place using his special technique. Placing the hapless shinobi under a Transformation jutsu, Katai went off to learn the things that Konoha was not willing to teach him.
After a little time to recover, the Sage dragged Yamazu to a open space in the forest to train him in summoning. After signing the scroll in his blood, the younger man attempted to summon a monkey of average size, but ended up with a small baby. After a few hours, Yamazu was doing a little better thanks to a few pointers from the Sage, but was yet to summon any primate of a decent size. It took him almost a week before summoning anything near battle ready.
The Sage continue to train the young chuunin for some time, several months passing by in quick succession. Yamazu learned many new things, including fuuinjutsu and how he had three elemental affinities. Eventually though, the Sage recieved a mission that meant he had to leave the Village once more. He gave Yamazu a choice; stay here and learn on his own, or go with him and train on the road leaving his friends behind. The man gave him a few hours to think about it and Yamazu decided to follow the Sage, bidding goodbye to Aikou for the time being.
Returning after a year on the road, Yamazu was a lot more learned. However, he was as mischievous as he ever was and the first thing he did after passing through the gates was steal an apple from a stall. After the short chase the guards gave, Yamazu planned to meet up with Aikou and catch up.
Shortly afterwards, however, an old friend would also return and nearly bring it all to an end. Friends; Losing One To The Light And The Other To Darkness- Spoiler:
During his time away, Katai had grown very strong indeed and was now an even more powerful genjutsu user. Thanks to his innate skill to rip into peoples’ minds, this area of the ninja arsenal came naturally to him. Unfortunately, he had evolved into a sadist and loved seeing people in pain, emotionally or physically. His only fear was Aikou's ability, which could see right through his illusions. He hatched a plan to kill her as well as steal forbidden scrolls from the Konoha stores, but before he could even begin it he came across Yamazu while he was searching for her and his erstwhile team-mate instantly recognised him.
The genjutsu user's plan relied on surprise and he had heard of Aikou’s close friendship with Yamazu. He did not have a chance when Katai but his genjutsu on him. Rather than kill him straight away after the illusion was cast, the fiend poisoned Yamazu, putting the young chuunin in a coma that would slowly (and quite painfully) destroy him. Katai did this because he knew just how much Aikou cared for her friends and wanted her off form when they met. When Aikou heard what happened, she knew who was behind it at once and guessed his plan thanks to the amount of times Katai had asked her questions about her unique ability and Konoha's forbidden techniques.
Hunting him down was easy, despite the number of traps Katai had set. Sending a messager pigeon to warn the Village of his defection, Aikou found and fought with Katai before he could reach any deeper into her home. During the fight, Katai reached deep into Aikou's mind and tried to disable her directly, knowing that genjutsu would not work. However, Aikou had been training not just in body, but also in mind and was able to deny Katai her mind, but he escaped her wrath. Yamazu was still in a coma thanks to the genjutsu and although the poison had been remedied, the illusion was swiftly degrading the chuunin's mind. Using all her strength, Aikou was somehow able to pull Yamazu out of his nightmare using her ability. Sadly, the genjutsu was too powerful to be denied even for Aikou's ability and it took her life. Monkeying About- Spoiler:
Shortly after Aikou’s funeral, Yamazu was tasked in hunting down and eliminating Katai, which he accepted with enthusiasm despite his belief that revenge was wrong. But before he was even able to prepare for the mission, the Sage turned up and the young man found himself reverse summoned to the land of the monkeys. There, the Sage explained to the disorientated Yamazu that he would learn the Battle Form that only the Monkey Sage's knew from the Three Wise Monkeys.
The Sage brought the young student before the Triplets. The three monkeys were sat cross-legged on identical rocks, but with the words 'see', 'hear' and 'speak' carved in each one. The monkeys too were completely identical save for the one sat on the 'see' rock; his eyes were cataracted instead of the amber colour of the other two. The Sage bowed before each one and they introduced themselves as Sun (the blind one), Wu (who sat upon the rock marked 'hear' and spoke rather loudly) and Kong (who did not really introduce himself as much as raise a hand and grunt).
The Triplets explained that the Battle Form was a powerful combat transformation that intensified the users chakra and physical dexterity and strength to levels of awe inspiring height. However, as with most powerful techniques, the Form was not without its dangers and extended use in battle would make the chakra network collapse under the massive strain of maintaining such intense energy. Since the network was so intergrated with the veins and muscles of the body, these would also be extensively harmed. Not only would overuse of the Battle Form cripple him, the damage to the network would prevent him from molding chakra ever again, if he did not die straight away from the physical shock.
Yamazu was not so easily dissuaded however, and he asked that the Triplets teach him the Form. Looking at one another (except for Sun, who turned his head in the wrong direction), they formed several handseals and held their hands palm forwards towards the young shinobi. Yamazu was enveloped in a golden glow and lifted from the ground, his appearence changing into something more resembling a monkey. He grew a tail and his muscles grew larger, bulging under his luckily loose fitting clothes. More hair grew over his face, hands and feet while his eyes turned from black to a luminescent amber colour.
Lowered back to the ground, Yamazu opened his mouth to speak but was struck with a massive pain wracking throughout his body. Crumpling to the ground, the Triplets explained that for his body to accustom to the Battle Form transformation he must maintain it for seven days and nights. If he failed to stay in the Form then his chakra network would burn out and he would slip into a coma from which there was no awakening.
Focussing through the pain, Yamazu pushed himself up to a sitting position and nodded his understanding. The Sage, knowing that they young man would need all his concentration to survive, explained that he was leaving to gather intel on Katai for him while he trained so that he would have a head start when he begun his own search. Able to cast this thought from his mind now, Yamazu thanked the Sage and settled down into his meditation, face drawn thin in pain. Fall Of The Sage- Spoiler:
The Monkey Sage found that tracking down Katai was a task far more difficult than he had anticipated. His student's old friend may have fallen far into madness, but he was none the less clever for it. Many were times that the Sage found himself in a trap sprung by men and women under an illusion cast by the genjutsu specialist.
It did not help that many of the ambushers were innocent people who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was nearly killed when a small child attacked him and he pulled his blow, resulting in the knife the young boy possessed stabbing him in the side.
Finally, after almost eight days of searching, the Sage caught up to Katai. It was a complete accident; the Sage had come to one town after deciding to change his search pattern and Katai almost tripped right over him. The following chase took over two hours but the Sage finally cornered the traitor. Announcing that he would spend the rest of his days rotting in a cell, Katai laughed and declared 'Not today!' before lunging at the man.
The Sage, caught off guard struck a fatal blow and Katai sunk to the ground dead. With a curse, the Sage knelt to examine the body only to gasp in shock as its face dissolved and changed into the features of the boy that had stabbed him before. A hiss came from under the boys clothes and the corpse exploded, hundreds of kunai and shuriken spitting forwards.
When the dust settled the Sage was one of the many among the dead, a kunai stuck in his heart. Two Sides, Same Coin- Spoiler:
While the Sage went out to look up leads on Katai, Yamazu was hard at work trying not to die. It was much more difficult than he had imagined it would be, despite that it involved not moving mainly. Sometimes a small monkey would come along and give him some foul tasting paste to eat that kept him from starving to death and a small cup of water to keep him hydrated, but other than that, he barely moved at all.
On the last night, sweating profusely with the effort of maintaining the Battle Form, the Triplets finally announced that his body should have naturally adjusted to the chakra shift and that he may revert back to his normal form. With a massive sigh, Yamazu's hair receded and his muscles shrunk. When his eyes turned back to black, they rolled back into his head and he fell unconscious.
When he awoke, the Triplets gave him the bad news; the Sage had been killed in a trap set by Katai. Furious, the young shinobi demanded that the monkeys send him back so that he could deliver justice to his former friend. When the monkeys asked whether he meant justice or vengeance, Yamazu merely glared and once more told them to send him back. Telling him to think hard on what he really wanted, the Triplets sent him back to Konoha.
Without even waiting for the Sage's body to return home, Yamazu chased off after Katai's trail. Hearing what he had done, the authorities sent a unit of ANBU Black Ops after him to bring him back, since it was believed that Katai was beyond the boarders of the Land of Fire and if Yamazu crossed the boarder it may cause an international incident.
Katai was not content to be hunted though, and ambushed Yamazu. Placing a genjutsu on him, Katai was about to dispatch him when the clone dispersed and several monkeys attacked him. Scrabbling to get them off, he did not see Yamazu crash from the trees above him, knocking Katai to the ground and placing a kunai at his neck; the first time Yamazu had ever used a sharp weapon.
For long moments the two looked at each other, one with disgust in his eyes and the other with fury. Finally, Yamazu leaned forward and head-butted Katai as hard as he could, pitching his old friend straight into unconsciousness. When the Black Ops group caught up, he was carrying Katai tied up over his shoulder. Present Day- Spoiler:
After the Katai incident, Yamazu attended the funeral of the Monkey Sage, receiving the man's headpiece in his will. The monks from his old home also came, knowing that their old student would be going through a difficult time. They told him to come home to the temple for a while after he had cleaned it with the Hokage.
Being given the title of Jounin for his work in retrieving and incarcerating Katai, Yamazu was given a few days leave to visit the temple. When he arrived, the monks crafted him a powerful weapon as a reward for reaching jounin, a staff made from the rare tree that grew on the mountain where the temple resided. Shortly after that, Yamazu found himself reverse summoned back to the land of the monkeys. There, the Triplets announced that, as the student of the previous Monkey Sage, he was entitled to receive the title as well. Accepting the honour, the new Monkey Sage was born.
Over the passing years, Yamazu's personality started to return to normal after the devastation of losing some many people he cared about at once. He became the carefree spirit he used to be and went on many missions, often greatly annoying the more serious minded shinobi that joined him. More recently, he has returned from a deep recon mission and is looking forward to returning back home. ||Face Claim| Series/Game: The Forbidden Kingdom (movie) Name: The Monkey King
